School Profile
This school was built by the Methodist church and is located on ½ hectare (1 ¼ acres) of land. It is situated in the western part of the country at 19 Barracks Road in Montego Bay, St. James. The school was started in 1871 with an attendance of five girls and was then known as Union Street School of St. James. In 1914 the name was changed to Montego Bay Girl’s School and in 1970 to Barracks Road Primary School. The school can be referred to as “a diamond in the ghetto’ where unemployment is high. Over the years we have been plagued with criminals loitering on the school compound because we do not have a security guard or watchman at the school. Proactive measures are incorporated to educate students and involve them in maintenance of school property, partnership with the police and make the school available for community use. There are 29 classrooms in all a sick bay, a teacher’s cottage, a library with 2 computers linked to the internet, 2 photo-copier machines, tuck shop, modern bathroom facilities for teachers and students, a staff of 36 teachers, a guidance counselors, a clerical assistant and an ancillary staff of five.
